When applying the varnish, be sure to allow the wood to dry before you use it. Once it's dry, apply two to four coats of varnish, depending on how dark you want your finish to be. You'll need two to four coats for a solid finish, and the thickness of each coat should be evenly distributed. Apply the varnish in thin layers and lightly sand in between layers. Once you're happy with the color and feel of the finish, you can begin painting.
